20/05/2008 - Blast off!

Yesterday I took delivery of a Radius Rocket, thanks to a fellow 68KMLA member! This is basically a NuBus accelerator card that has the principle components of a Quadra system on it - mine has a 33MHz 68040 processor and 20MB RAM in the form of 30 pin SIMMs. This thing is literally a foot long and slots into a standard NuBus slot, so in my case I can use it in either the Quadra 700 or the Mac IIcx. It can function either as an accelerator or a "second Mac" using Radius' RocketShare software (which I got along with the card). I'm still having a good tinker with it and it really shines when in the IIcx as that machine's own 16MHz 68030 seems like a dog compared to the card's '040. Maybe expect more of a writeup on this soon!

19/04/2008 - Link page

Finally I've gotten round to writing a page with some links to my favourite Mac-related web pages. It's still early days yet but take a look at the sites listed as they are all good.

11/03/2008 - Sleep Tight!

Following a discussion on Luddite's Cave BBS, I looked into getting a utility for the LC 475 server to sleep the hard drive while it is inactive. I downloaded a control panel called "Sleeper" which among other things provides a feature to sleep drives connected to the Mac after a pre-set period of time. This afternoon I installed and tested the software and it works fine. The server hard drive now spins down after 5 minutes of idling and will re-activate if someone makes a page request on Mac HTTP. If this front page took a few seconds to load when you first connected then that is why - the drive is just getting up to speed. I would say that for a total of about 23 hours in the day the server is doing nothing so the drive may as well be stopped rather than spinning and wearing it's bearings. Also the server drawer is practially silent now unless the drive spins up for a request, which is relatively infrequent.

26/02/2008 - New hard drive

Despite this web site running for a short period off my 1400cs, for the last few days the LC 475 server has been running on yet another old 80MB hard drive that I found purely by chance in a box of spares. Given the questionable reliability of these drives I also endevoured to get something better sorted. I won an eBay auction for 10 assorted SCSI adaptors and they arrived this morning. The majority of them are 50 to 68 pin adaptors meaning that I could connect a newer 68 pin SCSI hard drive to the LC 475. I happened to have a 5GB one sitting around that I pulled out of an old Dell PC years ago. I formatted and partitioned it for the LC 475, making seperate partitions for both the System software and all the web pages. It works well and the new drive is far quieter than the previous ones. I also now have bags of space on the drive for more web content, high-resolution photos, videos and data files. Hopefully I'll get round to adding these in the near future.

19/02/2008 - Server drive failure (again!)

Well it seems I spoke too soon - the hard drive that I borrowed from the LC III to replace the dead server drive has now also died. This has left me with no spare SCSI drives whatsoever so currently the site is being hosted temporarily on my PowerBook 1400cs until I find a solution to the problem.

18/02/2008 - New pages

I have added a couple of pages to the Collection section documenting my Mac LC IIIs and Performa 630. There are more machines to be added to the collection pages which I will hopefully get round to doing in the near future. Also, I have added appropriate "Back" navigation links into these web pages as I feel it was quite hard to browse round this site before using a web browser's navigation buttons. This should hopefully make this site more friendly to those using ancient web browsers too!

17/02/2008 - Server hard drive failure

Recently the hard drive on the LC 475 server died during a reboot. It had been making a horrible noise for quite a while and I didn't expect it to last very long. Fortunately I keep backups so now the server is running again using a hard drive borrowed from my LCIII. Like the old drive, it is 80MB, and it is of a similar age. I am currently looking into sorting out something else for it but I have a distinct lack of spare Mac SCSI hard drives that would be suitable for the purpose. Therefore I am considering using a more modern, 68 pin SCSI drive with a suitable adaptor. Report to follow on this when it happens.
