28/01/08 - SE/30 Digital Photo Frame

Well my project of finding a good use for my SE/30 certainly seems to have been a success. After Luddite's suggestion on the Retro BBS about using the SE/30 as a digital photo frame, I decided to go ahead and give it a try.

Yesterday I got Decor installed and this evening I picked out some photos for the SE/30 to display. They're mostly Mac-related pictures for the moment, though I can easily add others as I wish. I compressed the photo files on my G4 using a Photoshop droplet that I wrote for compressing photos for this website. The result is 30 low-res JPEG files, each 15 to 20KB in size. I copied them over to the SE/30 by floppy, (now THAT is retro)! Then it was a simple case of selecting the folder containing the images in Decor and setting Decor to cycle through them. I chose a 10 second pause between pictures and selected the "random" option so that the photos are displayed in no particular order. The result is brilliant - almost full screen B&W photos that change frequently.

The only problem is that the frequent changeover between photos makes the SE/30 so sluggish as to be unusable. However if it is simply going to serve as a photo frame, that issue isn't too bad and I can always switch off Decor if I want to use the machine for anything else. I was thinking of installing a utility to hide the menu bar but I've actually changed my mind for the time being. Maybe later.

I'm very happy with this!
