24/01/08 - Back with some goodies

Firstly, Happy 24th Mac Anniversary everyone!

I'm back after a few days break and even though I was away the retro fun didn't stop. Whilst staying with friends I used my PowerBook 1400cs as my main machine, connected to their wireless home network. The 1400cs is actually the only portable I have that can function wirelessly since my more modern 3400c unfortunately has non-functioning PCMCIA slots.

While away I also embarked on an evening's dumpster diving with a friend. It produced a number of goodies including 2 AppleDesign keyboards, one extremely filthy Apple Extended Keyboard, an ADB mouse II and a Performa 5260. We were most excited about the 5260 but upon getting it back to the house we discovered it was dead. Nothing I tried would resurrect it so at about 2am I declared it a lemon and stripped it of all useful parts. The next day I took it in my car to the local dump where there was a large, walk-in shipping container specially for old televisions and CRT monitors. I dropped the 5260 off inside and had a quick look around to see if there was anything interesting in the container. There were loads of yellowed PC monitors and I was on the point of leaving when I spotted something sitting at the back beneith two monitors: a graphite G3 iMac! I rescued it from the CRT graveyard and put it in the back of my car.

Found iMac

I got back to the house and tested the iMac and much to my delight it worked fine! There was no keyboard or mouse but fortunately the guy I was staying with managed to procure a USB wireless keyboard & mouse for the machine. The iMac is a 400MHz DV model with 256MB RAM, 12GB hard drive and OS X Jaguar installed. The guy I was staying with had been looking at iMacs on eBay for a wee while so I decided to give him the one I found. Needless to say he is delighted with it!

My conquests from the excursion are the keyboards, mouse and various 5260 components, none of which I've tried yet. There is a particularly beefy looking RAM module in the 5260 motherboard so I'm hoping it'll be a 32MB or even 64MB SIMM. More reports on that soon.
