As most will probably be aware, today was the day of Steve Jobs' MacWorld Keynote speech where he announces new updates and products. I wasn't lucky enough to be there but I watched a few of the live blogs on the internet from people who were sitting in the audience. It was so exciting piecing together what was happening from the short entries and blurry photographs on these websites. The keynote video is now online so I'll download it tomorrow morning while all the Americans are in bed and not loading up the Apple site with traffic!
The thing that particularly interests me in the new MacBook Air. It is insanely thin and is basically the modern answer to the PowerBook Duo (except without the docking part). I really like the design and can't wait to travel up to the Apple Store in Glasgow once they are on sale to try one out. There have been mixed reactions about the Air, many don't like the fact that it lacks an ethernet port and has a single USB port. Whilst these are problems for some, the Air is very much a forward-thinking notebook because wireless is playing a bigger and bigger part in how we do computing. If a person has modern gear, they basically have the capability to do their computing completely wirelessly - wireless internet, keyboards, printers and scanners are getting pretty commmon nowadays in modern setups.
However the price is a killing factor - the MacBook Air costs £1299 in the UK for the basic model and over £2000 for the "high-end" model, whilst the entry-level MacBook is £699. Would I buy one? Well maybe - I'll have to see whether it takes my fancy when I try one out. I have never bought a Mac, (or indeed any computer), brand new but I would like to do so at some point in the future. I don't have the money for one though so I guess I'll just have to make do with my Duo 2300c for the time being! ;-)
