13/01/08 - Laying cables, SE/30 ideas and a Mac Portable

I spent the majority of this afternoon laying a ream of 4 ethernet cables from the network switch in my study to the bedroom. The cables have a 4-connector ethernet socket at the end which means I can now plug in a few Macs in the bedroom and have them all networked and connected to the internet. Most importantly it means that my G4 is now wired to the router for its internet connection rather than using that pain-in-the-arse wireless USB dongle. A good bit of progress me thinks.

Earlier on Luddite suggested on the Retro BBS that I could use my SE/30 as a digital picture frame. It was something which I hadn't thought of before and it would actually be a fun thing to try. I've noticed that MacTV is doing something similar with his PowerMac 6100 media centre setup so it will be interesting to see if the SE/30 can successfully be used for displaying a slideshow of pictures. I'm rather keen on the idea of using Decor, a utility that allows you to use pictures as desktop backdrops under System 7. It has a function that cycles through pictures in the selected folder either in sequence or a random order. The only issue is that apparantly Decor requires 32-bit Quickdraw, and I'm not entirely sure if the SE/30 would meet this requirment. May do though. I'll have a play about with this and see if I can get something going.

Lastly, I have been lusting over an eBay (UK) auction over the last few days for a Macintosh Portable in the "Vintage Computing" section. I didn't bid though and it finished this evening at £46 plus £16.50 postage. A wee bit expensive but Macintosh Portables come up very rarely on eBay here. I thought about bidding but decided not to in the end, mainly because I know that I wouldn't really use it very much, I don't have the space, and I'm trying to save money at the moment to pay for car insurance, fuel and road tax! Also, currently I'm quite happy with my small selection of PowerBooks but a Mac Portable would be a really cool thing to have. Maybe one day!

Bah, wish I'd bought it now! ;-)
