08/01/08 - Playing with the Duo

Today I decided to pull my PowerBook Duo 2300c out from it's corner and have a play with it. Sadly it doesn't seem to get a lot of use as I also have a PowerBook 1400cs and 3400c which fulfill pretty much all of my portable PPC needs. That and the battery in the Duo is knackered.

After a bit of playing around I went and hunted out the Duo Dock II that I got with the machine when I bought it on eBay. I thought it would be an interesting to install a SCSI hard drive in the dock so I opened it up and had a look. Unfortunately the only Mac hard drive power supply lead I have is a little, short thing so I'm going to have to find an extender before I can get the drive running. However, I decided to move the Duo Dock II into the main house and get it set up so I can use it with the Duo more often. The 2300c has OS 8.6 installed but runs pretty sluggishly because it only has 28MB of RAM. I'm thinking of starting fresh with an install of OS 8.1 which will possibly speed things up a bit.

That's it for today's retro action. It is extremely windy tonight so if the server goes down it means that a tree has demolished the electricity lines again (it has happened many times before)!
