One day I was browsing through my local FreeCycle and I came across an advert for an "old Apple Mac PC". The advert was very poorly worded and contained some of the worst speling mistakes I've ever seen! ;-) This however is very typical of my local FreeCycle. Anyway, I contacted the guy and he told me it was a Performa 630, so given how close it was to home I drove over and picked it up. When I arrived at the guy's house I was pleasantly surprised: not only was he giving away the 630, but also a Multi-Scan 15" monitor, keyboard, mouse, Colour StyleWriter 1500 and a box containing all the original disks and manuals. I even got the original receipt for the machine: the Mac was bought on 13th July 1995 from Scotsys in Edinburgh, for £1330.15 including the monitor. The lady took out an AppleCare warranty on the 630, monitor and also a PowerBook 540c.
I got the machine home and powered it on. It came with 8MB RAM, a 500MB hard disk and had System 7.5 installed. There was very little else on the drive and I have a feeling it was wiped prior to it being given away.
Recently I received two 64MB RAM SIMMs from a fellow 68kmla member, so I installed one in the 630. Boy, this machine flies with all that memory! I installed Mac OS 8.1 and it works no problem with the ample memory. There is not alot else on the 630 yet as I haven't really got round to doing anything with it. eBay produced a very cheap Commslot ethernet card for the machine so now it can connect to the internet.
