Back when I was at school, the English department sported a long bench with about 8 Apple Macs on it for word processing purposes. They were a mixture of LCIIs, LC IIIs, LC 475s and I believe there was also a Performa 6200 there. Gradually the machines started dissappearing and were replaced by PCs, until there was only a single LC III left. This machine was in the best condition compared to the others so it was the one they decided to keep it. Whenever I needed to use a computer there for writing an essay I always used the LC III as the only alternative was the crash-prone Windows 98 machines. One day the head of the department said to me that he was going to get rid of the LC III and would I like to take it - of course! I took the machine home along with the keyboard, mouse, Performa display and a sealed copy of ClarisWorks II!
I used the machine for a while for a few tasks and even took it to University with me. However it has now fallen into disuse since I tend to use the highly-similar Performa 475 instead. The hard drive from this machine is currently being "borrowed" by the LC 475 server as it's original drive recently died.
I also found another LC III while I was University, in the same basement as I found the PowerMac 4400. It is primarily being used as a spares machine and has donated it's hard drivem floppy drive and LC PDS ethernet card to other machines in the collection.
I hope to get these machines doing something again one day, when I have more space to have them set up. For the time being though they are stored under a desk in the attic. In the photo, the one at the top is the ex-school LC III and the one at the bottom is the University LCIII.
